Updating Norton Antivirus Definitions

Directions for installing Norton Antivirus can be found at Installing Norton Antivirus.

Update Virus Definitions

Notice for Macintosh users: your GFU installation of Norton Antivirus was pre-configured to automatically update itself each week. If you have reason to believe this is not happening, please contact the Service Desk.

To update your virus definitions, first, go online. Next, double click on the yellow shield icon on the bottom right of your start bar near the clock. This brings up the program's main window. Here, simply click the 'LiveUpdate' button and click on the button labled 'Next' to begin the automated process.

Note for employees: Your work computer should be on the campus-wide system and set to automatically download updates. The LiveUpdate button on these computers is grayed out.

Scanning Instructions

  1. Double click on the yellow shield in the taskbar.
  2. Click scan computer in the menu on the left hand side.
  3. Select the drive(s) to scan, click scan.
  4. The scanning process will take several minutes
  5. If viruses are found you will be given instructions to remove or quarantine them if Norton cannot remove them automatically.

A disk scan may occur periodically every week or two. This occurs on its own and doesn't have to be initiated by you. If you think there is something wrong with your computer since you did nothing to start the scan, there is no need to fret, it is part of the program's natural sequence of events. You can also schedule scans to occur at regular intervals, if you wish to do so look in the Symantec menu under 'Scheduled Scans'. All of your files will be scanned and checked for viruses. If you need all of the necessary memory from your computer, you can stop the scan but it is recommended that you start a scan again later.
